Introduction to Opera: Lyric Opera’s Marriage of Figaro, La Cenerentola, and Wozzeck

  • Gleacher Center Citryfro N Cityfront Plaza Dr Chicago, IL, 60611 United States (map)

Saturdays, 10:00 AM - 12:30PM

Before movies, opera was the most emotional and most evolved art form, combining visceral thrills, cathartic release, and an ability to channel and examine that which society represses. Designed for opera newbies and lifelong opera lovers alike, this course explores the genre through the first three works of Lyric Opera’s season. We begin with Mozart’s Figaro, the greatest opera in the repertory: humane, spiritually and psychologically penetrating, erotic, wise, and alluring. We continue with Rossini’s Cinderella, a showcase for Rossini’s strength in comic opera. We conclude with Berg’s Wozzeck, the greatest modern opera: powerful, harrowing, and containing unparalleled emotional intensity.
