Beethoven: The Symphonies and Concertos

  • Gleacher Center North Cityfront Plaza Drive Chicago, IL, 60611 United States (map)

The Beethoven symphonies and concertos form the central core of Western Classical music; each of the nine symphonies and seven concertos comprise a separate world, from the heroism and tragedy of the Third, Fifth and Ninth symphonies, the pantheism of the “Pastoral” to the sublimity of the violin concerto and the brilliance and elan of the “Emperor” concerto. This seminar uses both archival and contemporary performances on CD and DVD to explore these essential works, offering entertaining and illuminating perspectives, historical and social, on this perennially fascinating repertory.
