Beethoven’s symphonies, the center of most listeners’ experience of Western music, changed the course of music history. Unrivaled in their achievement, every movement of every symphony is great. This course will present some of the highlights of his nine symphonies, including the ecstatic and sublime Symphony No. 6, the “Pastoral,” the exhilarating Symphony No. 7, and the iconic Symphony No. 9 and its famous Ode to Joy.
