Beethoven's Late Period

Published Jun 13, 2008

Beethoven’s oeuvre is conventionally divided into three periods. This course examines the unique characteristics of Beethoven’s final period with its increasingly personal yet loftily philosophical character.

These works occupy a unique status in Western art. Deep intellectuality is combined with humility and gentleness to create an aura of transcendence. Works examined are limited to the last three piano sonatas and Diabelli variations, Missa Solemnis, and the late quartets. Literary (e.g. Thomas Mann) and philosophical perspectives will be examined, as well.
