Rare Opportunity to Hear Ullmann & Zemlinsky Operas

Viktor Ullmann’s Der Zerbrochene Krug (The Broken Jug) and Alexander Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg (The Dwarf) will be broadcast on Chicago’s classical radio station, WFMT, on Saturday, August 9 at 12:30 p.m.

Part of the LA Opera on Air series, this performance took place earlier this season. James Conlon (music director of the Ravinia Festival as well as the LA Opera) conducts, and singers include Bonaventura Bottone, James Johnson, Steve Humes, Elizabeth Bishop, Rodrick Dixon, Mary Dunleavy, and Lauren McNeese.

I discussed this program at length on this blog earlier in the season following the premiere. On that page I linked to the opera company’s copious background information, including video previews and podcasts by James Conlon, Roderick Dixon (the tenor singing the role of the Dwarf) and others. Be sure to hear Conlon address (and convincingly dispense with) the seemingly irresistible caveat about music composed under tragic conditions. Zemlinksy was forced to flee Europe, while Ullmann was murdered in Auschwitz. It’s only natural to guard against giving the music “extra credit”  — we do it every day when discussing works like Shostakovich’s 4th symphony. Apart from his horrific personal fate, Ullmann’s career is especially intertwined with the tragedy — most of his pre-war works are lost, while most of his surviving works were composed in Terezin, where he helped lead the concentration camp’s cultural life. (The Broken Jug was composed before Terezin, but during the war, 1941-1942.) Conlon is adamant that these works deserve a place in the repertoire on their own merits, and he would never put the resources of the LA Opera behind any music that didn’t.

Alexander Zemlinsky based The Dwarf (Der Zwerg) on Oscar Wilde’s one-act tragedy “The Birthday of the Infanta.” Viktor Ullmann’s The Broken Jug (Der zerbrochene Krug) is taken from a comedy by the Romantic German poet Heinrich von Kleist. Vivid imagery, supercharged emotions, and rich late-Romantic orchestral textures characterize these operas. You’ll hear beguiling echoes of Mahler, Strauss and Wagner, but the overall effect is one of exciting musical discovery.
